How to ensure that authorized personnel remain safe in the isolation area?
ACCIDENT
🔸 Lifting operation in a port area with an MHC (Mobile Harbor Crane).
🔸 The signalman is improperly standing under the boom and not wearing a helmet.
🔸 After the cable broke and the load fell, the signalman remained in the line of fire and was nearly hit by a piece.
ISOLATION AREA
🔸 Must be defined in the rigging plan by the lifting engineer.
🔸 The isolation area may vary depending on the lifting stages, for example, being smaller during crane assembly.
🔸 Consider the potential distance that the load or part of the crane could reach.
🔸 In most cases, the isolation area should be 360°, since the crane may tip in any direction.
🔸 No person not involved in the operation should be inside the isolation area.
🔸 From the operating team, only essential personnel should be inside the isolation area.
🔸 Operating personnel must receive specific training to work in the isolation area.
🔸 No one should remain under the crane boom or block, even without a load.
🔸 The isolation must be both visual and physical. Visual so it can be seen from a safe distance, and physical to prevent intrusion.
